~ Introduction to :Adorn Yourself With Godliness ~
When you think of the word ADORN what do you think of? I think of lavish jewels, dressing up, make up, and beauty. The word adorn in the Greek language is kosmeo which is where we get the word cosmetic from. Not hard to see how that lines up. It's putting in order and getting ready. Women prepare for, or get ready in many different ways. There is an order to preparing as a woman. Ladies we all have our own personal prep routine. We wake up and the mirror is our tool in achieving what we want to become for the day. Our outer appearance plays a huge part in our day to day preparation. Choosing an outfit for our destination is normally the highlight of the look. Each day make up can be used differently. Maybe it's a bold colorful look, or subtle simple look we want that just enhances our natural beauty. No matter how it's done, hair, make up, outfit, it all becomes a part of what we pull together on a daily basis for our entrance into the world each day. This whole process we as women do could be looked at as adorning ourselves in the natural. We are putting ourselves in order, getting ready, adorning ourselves.
Godliness is defined as: A life of devotion to God, characterized by a reverent awareness of God's sovereignty and a commitment of obedience to God. Godliness is reverence, truth, dignity, and good works.
Reverence- Godliness is reverence and worship of God coupled with a lifestyle characterized by piety(quality of being religious or reverent) and devotion.
Truth- Godliness based on knowing God's revealed truth.
Dignity- Godliness demonstrated through an outward reputation from a heart that loves God and people.
Good Works- Godliness is not private goodness, but public goodness.
All of these attributes are involved in being a person who is adorned, or dressed in godliness. Having a devoted life to God that pleases Him.
Jesus Christ is our example of godliness. He was both human and divine, and in human form He showed us that we could adorn ourselves in godliness just as he did. Jesus showed how He adorned himself with godliness as a man in that he demonstrated love to people, was compassionate, prayed, performed good works, and depended on His father. Jesus was devoted to the plan of His father to be a human sacrifice for us to have eternal life. Showing that He was adorned with godliness.
We too can show our devotion just as Jesus did. Adorning ourselves with godliness, adorning ourselves with the attributes of Jesus. Jesus celebrated, laughed, cried, ate with friends, gathered with people and lived a life of godliness in His human body. So it's possible to do. Jesus never expected us to do anything He didn't do.
Godliness is not just a word we are expected to do. God has given us everything we need to live godly lives. When we come into the kingdom of God by receiving Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we are joint heirs and we are endued with power from the Holy Spirit. There is a transformation that occurs, God starts to make us over and we become a new person. 2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore if anyone is Christ, he is a new creation;old things have passed away, behold all things have become new."
Isn't that good news? But, we have to be on board, we have to cooperate. It has to be our choice to work with God. It is our choice to be obedient, or not. As we grow to love God, we will want to please him, and we will do whatever we can to make that commitment to God to live godly.
As we remember what godliness is and our example in Jesus Christ, we should want to make God happy and proud, please Him with making a conscious effort to be godly. There will always be nay sayers, and haters. It's their choice to be, just stick with yours and adorn yourself with godliness everywhere you go.
