Study of the Book of Esther Lesson 4 Chapter 4 & 5
Mordecai put on sackcloth and ashes and went into the city and cried loud and bitterly. He went as far as the kings gate, no one entered the kings gate dressed in sackcloth and ashes. The Jewish people in all of the provinces where the decree was issued, were fasting, weeping, and wailing and many of them lay in sackcloth and ashes mourning. Esther's maids and chamberlains came to her and told her what was happening. She became grieved and sent clothes for Mordecai. To take away his sackcloth and ashes, but he didn't want it. Esther called one of her chambermaids Hatach, who was assigned to attend to her. She sent the chambermaid to Mordecai to see why it was that they were in sackcloth and ashes. Mordecai told Hatach what had happened with the decree and it being done by Haman and the money offered to destroy the Jewish people. He gave a copy of the decree given to Shushan and told him to show Esther. He wanted her to give it to the king with supplication and to make a request before him for her people. Hatach came and told Esther what Mordecai said. All the kings servants and all of his people knew that whether a man or woman. No one could come unto the king, if so they would be put to death. Unless the king held out the golden sceptre to spare a life. Esther said she hadn't been called into the king in 30 days and Mordecai got that message and sent message back to Esther. Just because you are in the kings house doesn't mean you will be spared, if you keep silent relief and deliverance will come from somewhere else. She and her father's family will perish. He told her, she has came to a place of royalty for such a time as this. Esther sent word to Mordecai to gather all the Jewish people in Susa and fast for her. She said to not drink or eat for 3 days and nights, her and her maids would do so too, and she said she would go into the king and if she died, she dies. but she would do it. Mordecai followed her instructions.
On the 3rd day Esther put on her royal robe and stood in the inner court of the palace at the kings hall. The king was sitting on his throne facing the entrance. When the king saw Queen Esther, he was pleased with her and held out the gold scepter. She approached and touched the tip of it. He asked what she wanted, and if it were up to half the kingdom she could have it. She asked him and Haman to attend a banquet she prepared. The king sent for Haman immediately to attend the banquet. Again the king asked her what was her request. Reminding her that up to half the kingdom would be granted to her. She asked if it pleased the king to attend another banquet for them tomorrow and she would give her request. Haman went out happy and in high spirits. He saw Mordecai at the gate and he neither rose nor showed fear for the presence. This angered Haman but he went on anyway. He called his friends and his wife and began to boast about his wealth, his sons, and how he was elevated out of everyone. He even went on to say that he was the only one Queen Esther invited to the banquet and she was inviting him again tomorrow. He stated that this gave him no satisfaction as long as Moedecai sat at the gate. His wife Zeresh and all the friends told him to have a gallows built 75 feet high and ask the king to hang Mordecai from it. Then go with he king and be happy to dinner, Haman like that idea and had the gallows built.
Here we have a few events about the Jews reacting to scripts, they wept, fasted, wailed and wore sackcloth and ashes while mourning. Esther had them fasting with her for 3 days and nights. while preparing banquets for the king to pave the way to ask her request. Meanwhile Haman was still upset with Mordecai, and got an idea from his wife and friends to build a gallow and hang Moedecai from it. He like the idea and had it built.
This concludes lesson 4. Next week we will see what happens at the 2nd banquet and the request. Thank you for reading and please remember to comment or email your questions. Thank you, Remember Jesus loves you so much. Be blessed
