Study of the Book of Esther  Lesson 3 Chapter 3

After selecting his queen, King Xerxes honored Hammedatha's son Haman. He elevated him higher than the rest of the nobles. All the royal officials knelt and gave honor to him because the king commanded so. Mordecai didn't obey or pay him honor. The royal gate officials asked Mordecai why he didn't obey the kings command. They watched him day after day in non compliance of the kings command. They told Haman about his behavior to see if it would be tolerated, and also said he was a Jew. After Haman saw that Mordecai wasn't going to kneel and honour him, he was furious. When he learned who Mordecai and his people were, he didn't want to kill only him, he looked for ways to kill all of his people, which were the Jews. In the 12th year of King Xerxes, in the 1st month, the month of Nisan, they cast the pur (lot) in the presence of Haman to select a day and month. The lot fell on the month of Adar the 12th month. Haman told King Xerxes that there was a group of people that were scattered among the provinces of the kingdom who's customs were different and they didn't obey the kings laws and shouldn't be tolerated. He asked if it pleased him to let a decree be set out to destroy them. 10 thousand pieces of silver would be given to the men who carried out the decree. The king took off his signet ring and gave it to Haman the enemy of the Jews. The king told Haman to keep the money and do with the people what he wanted to. On the 13th day of the 3rd month the royal secretaries were summoned. They wrote in script to each province and in each different language Haman's orders to the kings satraps. Written in the name of King Xerxes and sealed with his ring. Dispatches were sent out to all the provinces with orders to kill, destroy, and annihilate the Jews. Women and children, young and old, on the 13th day of the 12th month. This copy was issued as law and given to every province and every nationality made known so they could be ready for that day. The king and Haman sat to drink, but the city of Susa was bewildered.

So here have Haman, being elevated higher than the other royal officials. So everyone is giving him his honor and kneeling. Mordecai dosen't do it because Haman is a proud man. It was a Persian custom to kneel and reverence your king. Haman was upset with Mordecai because he didn't kneel and honor him. This lead to the evil plan to destroy the Jewish people. Next week we will see what happens when the scripts are seen by the people.
