The Study of the Book of Ruth Lesson 2 Chapter 1 verses 14-22 & Chapter 2 verses 1-23
Today in scripture we find Orpah, Ruth's sister had decided to go back to her people and gods. She gave Naomi a kiss while she wept and departed them. Ruth, on the other hand, was determined to go with Naomi. Ruth let her mother in law know that she wanted to go with her, and to stop telling her to go back. She told her mother in law that wherever she went she was going, where she stayed, she was staying, Naomi's people would become her people, her God, would be her God also, where she would die, she too would die and be buried. When Naomi realized Ruth was determined, she let her go with her. when they entered into Bethlehem, the town was stirred by their presence. The women asked, is this Naomi? Naomi replied to them," Don't call me Naomi. " which means pleasant, "But call me Mara." which means bitter. Naomi explained to them that the Lord had dealt with her bitterly by the loss of her husband and her 2 sons. She asked so why call me Naomi, the Lord has afflicted me and brought misfortune upon me.
Ruth decided to go the fields and pick grain leftover from anyone who would favor her in their eyes. The field she went to belonged to Boaz, a relative of Naomi's dead husband. Boaz came into the field and greeted his workers, he asked 1 of the harvesters who Ruth belonged to. The harvester told him that she was a Moabitess ,daughter in law of Naomi, who had came with her from Moab.He also let Boaz know that she asked to glean in the field, picked her grain and is just now taking a rest. Boaz went to Ruth and told her not to glean anywhere else but his field. Stay with the women that worked for him and follow them, watch the men who work for him, because he told them not to touch her, and to drink whenever she was thirsty. Ruth bowed down and asked him, how could a foreigner find such favor with him. Boaz told her he knew all about her and how she helped her mother in law, left her mother, father, and homeland and came to a strange land she knew nothing about since her husbands death. He prayed the Lord bless her and repay her richly for what she had done. Ruth asked to continue to find favor in his eyes. She let him know that she was put to ease by his kind words to his servants even though she had no standing as they did. Boaz gave her dinner, and she ate til she was full. She had bread, wine vinegar and roasted grain. When she went to go back to work Boaz gave the harvesters orders to leave behind stalks for her and not rebuke or reprimand her. Ruth glean til the evening. She had about 30 pounds and she took it home, she also gave Naomi what she had left over from dinner with Boaz. Naomi asked where she went to pick, and Ruth told her in Boaz' field. Naomi explained to her that Boaz was a relative that was of help in her situation and hardships called a redeemer. Naomi claimed he had not stopped showing kindness to the living and the dead. Ruth shared Boaz' instructions about the working women and how to stay close while she worked. Naomi agreed and said it was good she was working with Boaz, and the women of the field there. Somewhere else she might get hurt. Ruth stayed close to the women of Boaz and worked til she was done and lived with her mother in law.
These passages of scripture are very encouraging, letting us know that God will provide for us when we believe He will. Ruth had left her home and her gods. Only to gain life and believe on the almighty God. She not only found favor with Boaz,, with he was a relative of her dead father in law to redeem them. She was able to work and feed herself and Naomi, without worry or danger. That's how God wants us to be in this day and time. He wants us to trust Him and that He will provide for us. God is the same God today and evermore. Please send your questions and comments. You are welcome to send me a private email if you wish. I answer all comments and emails.
