Women of the Bible Series Bible Study: Lesson 2
Last week we talked about Sarah and how she was in disbelief of having a baby. Conception seemed laughable to her especially since she was 90 years old. Well, it came to pass. Do any of you remember some of her attributes we went over?
Lesson 2 Deborah.
This week we will talk about Deborah, she was the only female judge of Israel who was named in the Bible. The story of Deborah, can be found in Judges chapters 4 & 5. Although there's not alot of information on Deborah, I think it was very cool she was a judge in the bible days .Well we know as a judge, Deborah had alot of wisdom, and she spoke the truth. There is a piece of information I felt was needed to share. and that was that, she had a special place where people knew to find her- it was a tree between two towns in the hill country of Ephraim. We can find that in (Judges 4:5) I wonder what the conversations were between the people who appeared before Judge Deborah and her Palm tree. Her discernment was well-known throughout Israel.
It took wisdom to call out what she knew about Gods plan of action for Barak to gather 10,000 men from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun to defeat the difficult enemy. She was bold, used wisdom as well as straight and to the point with matters. Barak told her, if you go with me I will go, If you don't I wont go. She agreed to go with him replying back.
"I will surely go with you. Nevertheless the road on which you are going, will not lead to your glory, for the Lord will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman."
That was her basic warning that he wasn't going to get any rewards for this battle because he was not the brave warrior who would kill the worst of the enemies. God gave that job to a woman named Jael. Deborah’s obedience resulted in peace and rest for all the children of Israel.
Here are a few attributes of our judge Deborah
She was a Judge, the Wife of Lappidoth , a Palm tree mediator with no emotional baggage that we know of , no weaknesses that we know of either. Pretty impressive for a bible chick huh? She believed God, acting in obedience and acts of bravery. She accepted the challenge of a leadership role, bravely declaring truth and boldly obeying God, in spite of the political setting.
Who among us reading today is a Deborah?
Lord we come to your throne today asking for your grace, mercy and unmerited favor over our lives. We thank you for giving us the boldness we need so much to deliver your word to all who are without. Help us be sensitive to your call and you plan for lives in bravery as we trust you to help us deliver your word, for you glory. All these things we ask in Jesus name , Amen
