Women of the Bible Series Bible Study: Lesson 1

  Welcome ladies to Lesson 1
"Women of the Bible" Online Bible Study

Today we are going to start with Sarah, the wife of Abraham

Here is some information on Sarah:
She was a Homemaker, the wife of Abraham, mother to Isaac, and a tent dweller. Sarah was an emotional self-doubter, fearful, and full of unbelief. Those were some of her weaknesses. We can even say she was eavesdropping when the Lord told Abraham that she would conceive. Making her an eavesdropper. She was accused of laughing inappropriately, only because she didn't believe what she overheard. The beauty of what Sarah's makeup contained was that she was believing God,  being receptive to his will, and faithful to his promises .It was brave of her to accept this makeover in order for God to fulfill his promise through her. Not only conceiving a child, but carrying him safely through birth. Not to mention her being 90 years old.
I think Sarah has gotten a bit of a bad rap in some sermons. Many sermons and lessons  about Sarah discussed her response on the news that she would have a child in her old age.

In Genesis Chapter 18. 10-12 (NLT Version) This is the story we have;

10 Then one of them said, “I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!” Sarah was listening to this conversation from the tent.
11 Abraham and Sarah were both very old by this time, and Sarah was long past the age of having children.
12 So she laughed silently to herself and said, “How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my master—my husband—is also so old?”

Here she didn't believe she'd have a child because she and her husband were both old.

Verses 13-15
13 Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘Can an old woman like me have a baby?’
14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”
15 Sarah was afraid, so she denied it, saying, “I didn’t laugh.”
But the Lord said, “No, you did laugh.”

The Lord questioned Abraham about Sarah's unbelief, and He asked, is there anything to hard for the Lord? The Lord told them HE would return the same time next year and Sarah would have a son, Being afraid Sarah said she didn't laugh, but the Lord let her know He knew she did.

Sarah and Abraham were waiting for the promise of God to be fulfilled that they would have as many children as the stars. Because she was getting old, Sarah sent her handmaids in to be with Abraham.  I can relate to Sarah,  I’m not so great at waiting on God’s timing either. It’s easy to think we can “help God out a little”, and make a ship wreck.

Sarah exercised her faith and she waited on God's promises. Just as we have to do today. We may not be 90 and waiting on conception, but we are certainly in this life and walk waiting on God's promises, His timing and having faith to believe they will come to pass.

Are you a Sarah?
Father, we come to you today asking you to help us try to have faith to believe your promises and to be able to await your timing. It's important that we learn to lean on you, you are the author and finisher of our faith, so we need to be the in between and conquer our fear and develop our Sarah moments and conceive whatever it is that you would have for us to do. We ask this in Jesus name Amen.
